Rules    HIRING EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Hawke’s Bay Canoe Club runs on an Honesty System for hiring gear.  This requires everybody to participate and follow a few simple Guidelines.  Without this support the Club will not be able to provide adequate and suitable equipment.

·         Before taking boats, fill out hireage form.  State boat type and amount of money paid. Only use supporting equipment (spray-deck & paddles) specifically labelled for specialist boats ie. Spectrums, Traveller, DR (Wavehopper), and different sized cockpits.   IF IN DOUBT PLEASE ASK.

·         Always Wash-Out boats (removing any stones), wash down gear, and hang up to dry.   EVEN IF THIS WASN’T DONE BEFORE YOU, it is now your responsibility.

·         Please pay for hireage according to the Club rates, not your own formula. Fill out the small hireage envelope, place your payment in it and drop it in the honesty box.

·         Members can only hire one set of gear themselves (per time) at the Member rate, any subsequent sets must be hired at Non-member rates.

·         Group Members must be taking part in a Supervised Activity otherwise they must hire Equipment at Non-member Rates.

·         Keys are NOT to be lent to anyone else at all. It is your own personal Key and you risk confiscation if you do lend it. If you lose your key please notify the Membership Officer immediately, your lost key can be replaced and the old one immediately denied access on the data logger

·         PLEASE report any broken, damaged, or lost equipment to the gear officer otherwise this equipment will not be available to the next person (this might be you).

·         Equipment is hired with the understanding that fair wear & tear during normal use is acceptable, but if its being abused or is lost then it becomes your responsibility.  Each case will be treated on it’s own merits, and replacement cost will be set by the Committee on a case by case basis.

·         Private Boats and Equipment are NOT available for general use without prior permission from the owner.  All Club Equipment is clearly labelled.

·         If the boat you are hiring has Airbags fitted please leave them there, as they are fitted for your safety (as well as the boats).  This really is important.

·         When wishing to Book Boats and Equipment in advance to guarantee availability, in the first instance please ring the Booking Officer to make that Booking (this is the only way to make a Booking).  Upon picking up the equipment please fill in the Hireage / Safety form as per normal, fill out the hireage envelope, put your payment in it and drop it in the Honesty Box.

·         Boats or equipment hired for more than one day must be booked through the booking officer.

·         Multi-day hireages can be negotiated at different rates but each hireage will be considered on its own merits.

·         Remember, a Club Boat needs to be treated with more respect than if it was your own boat.  Thus no Rock-Splats, no Rock Boffs, no Rock Slides, in other words just look after them - otherwise there may be no more.

·         The Club needs your support with these issues. Please report to a Committee Member any person (member or non-member) not complying with these Guidelines, as it is potentially your future equipment that is being abused.  As an initial disciplinary measure the offending person’s key will be re-called and further action considered.

TOP                                        The following special rules apply to the Clubs

Topo-Duo

·         These Rules have been set to protect both the boat and to promote paddlers' safety.

·         The Topo-Duo can only be hired by HBCC members.

·         If transporting away from the Pandora vicinity to paddle on rivers or anywhere else, it must be booked through the Booking Officer.  If the Booking Officer is not available, permission must be gained from another Committee Member.

·         When hiring for ‘away’ trips at least one paddler must be a registered Topo-paddler (to become a registered Topo-Duo paddler contact the Booking Officer).

·         Do Not pick the boat up by the Cockpits (as this will greatly reduce the Cockpit life) - use the End-Loops.

·         When adjusting Foot-Plates be aware of the Air-Bags, release the pressure and blow up again if necessary.

·         Never paddle the boat without all the Air-Bags in place, this could be very dangerous (for yourself and the boat) if you took a swim.

·         Make sure all stones are removed, as these will puncture the Air-bags.

·         No Seal-launches.

·         Relax and Enjoy.

Many Thanks,  Gear Officer

SHED HOUSEKEEPING

Over the last 12 months some issues have arisen that need to be resolved such as private boats being used without authorisation, hireages not being recorded, boats being left in a poor state etc. Following these shed procedures will help to eliminate these problems.

The door lock has a data logger attached and the committee will monitor who is coming and going. Please “log in” in the hireage book whenever going into the shed. Even if you are not going to hire anything please just enter your name and date, and the reason for being there, eg: “washing my boat”.

The committee does need your support by following these procedures and please remember they are for every ones benefit.

TO USE THE DOOR LOCK

Place your “key” near the black sensor that is mounted on the wall just to the left of the old lock. This will activate the sensor and the lock will release allowing the door to open. After about 5 seconds the lock will re-engage so that when the door is closed it will automatically lock.

To get out of the shed if the door is closed press the green button on the wall beside the door.

The “keys” are waterproof but probably not rustproof.

SHED PROCEDURES

1)      Whenever going into the shed please “log in” in the hireage book. Even if you are not going to hire anything please just enter your name and date, and the reason for being there, eg: “washing my boat”.

2)      If hiring a boat or equipment fill in the hireage book and place your payment in the envelopes provided before taking the boat away. Write your name, date, and amount on the envelope in the spaces provided and drop the envelope in the honesty box.

Note the committee also uses the hireage records to determine which are the most popular boats. This information is used to help decide on new boat purchases.

3)      When returning your boat after a paddle please remove any stones that may be inside it, and if you have been paddling in the sea please give the boat and buoyancy a spray with the hose. Remember to put the hose away!

4)      Please return the boat to its correct rack or storage bin.

5)      If the boat you wish to hire is not there and is not written in the hireage book then please inform a committee member.

REPAIRS

The committee is endeavouring to get repairs done more promptly. Wally Shuker has taken over the responsibility for boat and equipment maintenance. He will be the first point of contact for club members and will then organise to have repairs carried out.

Leave a note on the hireage form detailing boat and required repairs and if possible also contact Wally ssplat@xtra.co.nz.
