Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I pay for the bears?

A: By International transfer, personal check or bank check. Remember, all the bears shown in the 'Available' galleries are ready and waiting for adoption, so they can be shipped as soon as the funds are cleared!
Some methods are faster than others, so please E-mail me if you have any further questions.

Please note: I personally guarantee your money is safe and will send you my full name, address and phone number by request.

If you should want to find out what the (quoted) New Zealand price is worth in your currency, There's a link to a currency converter at the top of each available bear page that looks like this: When you click on it, you will be taken to a currency converter.
You will find it very simple to use. Just enter the amount in the space next to the New Zealand flag, click on the words "Click here" above that, and scroll, if necessary, down to your currency. When finished, click the X (close) button to return to the bear page.

Q: I noticed that most other bear artists tend to use only mohair for their bears, why don't you?

A: I do not limit my choice of fur to mohair only. This is a personal choice, some may disagree, but I feel that with the much wider range of acrylic, wool, cotton and other furs available, I can offer a far greater range of original, beautiful bears than I could if I used mohair exclusively.
I particularly like using long, thick furs that make the bears more 'cuddly' and huggable.
The exception here is my smaller bears, which are impossible to make using long, thick fur.

Q: Do you make bears or dogs to order?

A: Generally speaking, no. I enjoy making them in my own time, at my own pace, and making to order would jeopardize my determination to make 'one offs' only.
However, I could be persuaded if someone has a piece of fur and asks me if I could make one 'similar to - but not the same - as one in my Galleries. Having said that, please remember that more often than not, the original pattern (especially the head patterns) are discarded after the bear is made, making it impossible to make an identical one.

(Please note, As of 2008, Emma no longer makes bears)

Q: Why are your bears not recommenced for young children?

A: Mainly because they have components, like glass eyes and in some, small teeth, that could come loose with the rough and tumble way children will play with the bear, and with it comes the danger of swallowing or choking on them. Also, as most bear artists do, I prefer to use hardboard or wooden washers with metal split-pins for the joints instead of plastic 'safety' joints, which means the bear can't be immersed in water to wash and keep hygienic.

Q: Do your bears come with any kind of certificate?

A: Yes, all my open-mouth bears and dogs come with a certificate of authenticity, a swing ticket with care instructions and a cloth label behind the left ear.

Q: Do you have a catalogue of your bears?

A: I do not produce a catalogue because my bears are mostly 'one of a kind'. Therefore, as soon as one bear is sold, a catalogue would be out of date! (You will find that bear makers who do have catalogues, tend to produce many identical bears of a 'limited Edition', sometimes from 150 to 1000)
