Hello,
my name is Emma and I live on Waiheke Island, New Zealand.
Waiheke, often referred to as 'The Jewel of the Hauraki Gulf', lies
about 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland.
Auckland being called 'The Big Smoke' is avoided by me at (almost)
all cost. Waiheke with its laid-back atmosphere and near 'Olde Worlde'
feel (No traffic lights, McDonalds, KFC or huge department stores)
provides a perfect setting for creative activity. It boasts many
resident arts and crafts people.
A few
years ago I entered one of my other soft
creations in the 'Mid Winter Doll and Teddybear Festival' for
which I received a blue ribbon. It so happened that Sheryl D'Ath from
'Bell's Stuff' had a stall at the same show and I was so impressed
with her bears that it inspired me to try and make open mouth bears
too.
I
had no intention to copy her bears, I just wanted to try and design
my own open-mouth bear. Many hours and a heap of discarded
heads later, My beloved Cheeky
was born (who was soon snapped up by my daughter Vanessa).
Since
then, I have concentrated mainly on open mouth bears (and dogs),
except for a small collection of mini bears, which are too small
to have an open mouth.
Being
one of those people who get bored quickly doing the same thing too
long, I'm forever experimenting with different ways to do the mouth.
Which also means very few of my bears look like any I've made before.
While this continued experimenting does mean my small mount of discarded
bear heads keeps getting bigger and bigger (they don't always turn
out the way I envisaged them), it also means I never get the dreaded
'Bear making block' other artists seem to suffer from occasionally.
Of course it helps that it's a part time hobby and I am not dependent
on sales to provide my living.
I
hope you enjoy your stay on my website and please, if you have any
comments, suggestions or even criticisms, please don't hesitate
to contact me, or leave a comment or two in my guest book. I promise
none of my bears will come out and bite you! (their teeth are all
show and no bite! ;-)
Have
a nice day!
Emma B
