Dunedin Seniors' Help ____  Fun Stuff About Me Contact

  HELP Links  Page

You are welcome to explore any of these various hints for yourself - but they are mainly intended as easy links for friends who have talked with me first.

Also, I think everything I suggest or recommend is *FREE* - I don't believe one needs to spend much cash to enjoy the wonderful internet !

Dead Links ? - the internet is constantly changing... I check and update these links periodically, so if any are dead then I'm sorry.
(Check the "Page Last Updated" at very top of all my webpages to decide how 'fresh' each page is).

  INTERNET TOOLS

'Ian's Pink Page' - My personal handy surfing Start (or Home) Page - very small and quick to load, distinctive pink, and mainly with a simple box for my favourite Search Engine - Google (plus also another good one as 2nd opinion!)
Click Here, to set 'Ian's Pink Page' as your Home Page

If that quick link doesn't work for you, go to 'Internet Options' then enter THIS as your Home Page. http://eaglekiwi.com/search.htm

AVG - The excellent and totally FREE Anti-Virus program, I use and recommend. Why pay, for Nortons, MacAfees, whatever ??!
Get it here (AVG Free Edition), then remember once installed to UPDATE it every few days (the same as every worthwhile A.V. program).

SpyWare - almost as bad as viruses - you MUST have SOME protection, and SPYBOT-SD is acknowledged as the best (free) one available!
Click the logo to download directly (3.2MB), or click HERE to do to the official SpyBot website, where you can read about it and then download.

HiJack This- A small simple program to produce a list for you of virtually everything loaded/running on your PC - especially aimed at showing up 'browser hijackers'. Once run, it allows you to selectively REMOVE items, but this should be done only IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING !!
(Preferably, send the output file to an 'expert', who can then see what you have, and advise best options).

Ping Plotter- a very useful, clear, and reliable "ping" program, which lets you clearly see the ROUTE between you and any website, and also the exact TIMINGS all along the way.
You can try the Shareware version, but personally I find the original (FREEWare) Version 1.10 is a superb program in itself.

Steve Gibson - has a website (and a philosophy and style) that everyone should follow.  Lots of fascinating and free QUALITY utilities here, mainly dealing with the security of your PC on the internet.   Please - go take a look, and especially try his 'SHIELDS UP' !

PC-cillin - free ONLine ANTIVIRUS check (may take short while to load).

Easily store all YOUR personal web bookmarks (or "favorites") on this website.  They can then be easily accessed by you from any PC in the world - OR you can make them available to a friend, who can then browse through YOUR bookmarks at leisure - OR you can simply use this as a perfect BACKUP for your personal collection.  Even if your whole PC explodes - your bookmarks are still available at this website.

  COMPUTER CARE

IrfanView logo The BEST graphics program for normal folks
My longtime favourite. Free, simple, yet packed with really USEFUL features. It can not only display GIF, JPG, BMP, and MANY other picture formats, but can also handle movies, audio files, almost anything.
Allows option to simply click thru to display every picture in current directory, each as either original size or fitted to match YOUR screen.
Also very easy to "compress" picture files yourself - an essential for those sending pix via email, or putting them on websites.
Click the link, for MY clear(?) instructions on getting and installing it.

Tardis icon Tardis - set your PC clock PERMANENTLY 'correct' - I use and recommend it.
Note: Only needed for W98, as XP has this feature already built-in.

PCPitStop - Check your PC: hardware, software, internet connection, the lot!

PacsPortal - Understand, and fix, multiple progs running at STARTUP

Visit chami.com/tips/
for Windows, Internet and programming related tips/mini-tutorials  "CHAMI.com" - All you other Computer Nerds, this site will teach you HEAPS of things you've always wanted to know... about Windows, Internet, HTML, etc etc.    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (but only if you have a few hours to spare ;-))
