What is it?

Checking Safety issues is first. Repairing faults is second.

What follows below is our gas fitters check list.

Gas Appliance Check List

The main checks are Ventilation, Room Size, Flueing, and Clearances relating to safety.

  • Before servicing/installing check the following - Failure to locate faults can result in Death.
  • Safety First - If the appliance does not pass the safety test proceed no further.
  • Appliances in bedrooms or bathrooms must be balanced flue. If not proceed no further - inform customer appliance could cause death in this position.
  • Check room size - must be minimum of 10 Sqm. Check input for total room size if flueless.
  • Is the appliance the correct distance from combustibles - if not fit shield.
  • Does the room need permanent ventilation. Grills for vents may be required.
  • Is the water heater in a garage with out a vapour barrier or installed 450mm off the ground.
  • Is the installation correct in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
  • The appliance needs to comply with the current Code not the code it was installed to.

    Servicing Check List
  • Does the appliance light as intended. What are the operational faults.
  • Check flame failure - will the appliance cut off if the pilot goes out.
  • Is there a pull on the flue - check with smoke
  • Is products of combustion discharging from the draught divertor.
  • Are there any signs of a blocked heat exchanger or flue. Blackening of surrounding surfaces are caused by blocked flues or poor combustion.
  • Is the cowl terminating in the correct position. Minimum 700mm above the roof or high enough to get a pull on the flue.
  • Is the flue 1.5m or longer. 1.5m minimum length? Is the size correct for the appliance?
  • Does the flue have sufficient rise? What is the condition of the flue? Asbestos flues must be replaced.
  • Is appliance operating normally as the manufacturer intended it to?
  • If not ask customer to disconnect appliance or correct problem. If dangerous and your are not able to disconnect we have to report to the Ministry of Commerce Energy Division. The Energy Safety Service Number is  472 0030.
  • Vacuum the lint and dust from the appliance including the burner, pilot burner, air intake openings, suck the lint out from inside the burner.
  • Prick the main burner injector with 10amp fuse wire with appliance going. This will blow out any dirt inside the injector.
  • Blow out the Pilot burner tube. Prick the pilot injector with fine wire.
  • Test the thermocouple millivolt out put. Should be a minimum of 14millivolts.
  • Check the burner pressure with a u gauge. Adjust in accordance with the appliance data for Burner Pressure.
  • What does the flame picture look like. Most fires are clear blue flame. Some flame effect fire have yellow tipping.
  • But make sure it is not impinging on coals wrongly positioned causing soot to build up.
  • Is the appliance secured to the building.
  • Have any safety devices been disconnected.
  • Activate the relief valve it it has one.
  • No gas appliances are to be in bedrooms or bathrooms other than balanced flue appliances.
  • If turning the gas back on check all appliances in the buildings affected as they must all comply with the current code.

The servicing of gas appliances is to be done in accordance with the Gas Regulations and the Gas Act.
