Descendants of Thomas Manning Senior of Rathdrum

Notes

12. George Manning

Mention is Made in the 1766 parish list of Freeholders being in Ballyteigue
According to one observer, there wasn't a good house left standing in the county after 1798
But it was also reputed that George Manning of Ballyteague was one of the most hated
Protestant supporters of Government and was well known for burning houses down.
In "The Rebellion in Wicklow in 1798 " Late rebellion to 'Brigand war' page 227-338. it stated County
Coroner George Manning was burned out of his Ballyteigue home as he and several of his sons and
nephews were yeoman, notwithstanding the protestations of his wife who was acquainted with the
attackers. The Mannings were held responsible for burning of Bryan Devlin's home at Croneybeg, Devlin
held his farm from Mr George Manning of Ballyteigue.
In another book it stated that Billy Manning 'the Briton' of Ballintombay, shot Morgan Toomey in Piece
Harney's land , Baravore, were he was buried, though Morgan had a pass.
The form and character of the Rebellion as it manifested itself in Wicklow has long puzzled
historians. Wicklow's anomaly lies n the fact that previous to the Rebellion. the county was
considered to be one of the most prosperous, stable and relatively quiet regions in the country. It
had the most successful Protestant settlement outside Ulster and a landed establishment of
marked liberalism
