Basenji Rehome / Rescue Service |
|
Despite only limited numbers of Basenjis being bred (current and past) in New Zealand, there is still a need for a Basenji Rehome/Rescue Service. I have assisted in a number of rehomes as well as fostering and dog-sitting Basenjis. As a breeder I have taken my responsibility seriously and will take back any dog that I have bred and that the owners are no longer able to care for, for whatever reason. An example of this is when I discovered a dog I bred was in the SPCA. The owners were unfortunately nowhere to be found, and obviously no longer cared about the dog. I was in immediate contact with the SPCA and adopted back what I considered my own dog. His name is Max and his photo can be found in the Photo Album. No one is sure just what Max had been through prior to being handed in to the Vet for treatment, but we do know that he obviously wasn't cared about. Why his owners never contacted me or the SPCA remains a mystery. But the good news is that I got him back and he has settled in with his new family very well. If you have a Basenji, or know of one that needs rehoming, please contact the Rep nearest you (they are listed below) and we will do what we can to help. There is a network of Basenji owners and fanciers around the country that will also assist in getting a Basenji to a good home. No judgment is made against people giving up their Basenji, we are just concerned about getting the right home for the dog. All too often Basenjis are rehomed with the new owners having no idea about the breed. We want to stop that! If you are considering adopting a Basenji, do your research! I recommend reading What Is A Basenji? and I also have information packs available, just request one. If you would like to put your name down as a prospective owner, or if you have any questions, please contact one of us. Also if you wish to foster a Basenji, or just assist in finding new homes. All help is very much appreciated. Basenji Rehome/Rescue Reps; South Island contact is Christine Clark North Island contact is Julie Goodwin |

March 2006 Two red/white basenjis available - a male, neutered, approx 6 years old, and a female, intact, 5½ yrs old. The female will need to be spayed by her new owners. These two are living together, and it is preferred they go together, however separate homes will be considered. The girl is a strong hunter, so she'll need a home with no cats. The boy does have aggression issues with male dogs, so a home with male dogs will be out of the question. This is about all the information I have on these two at present. If you'd like to know more, please contact me, either email or phone (03 313 4490) with your questions and I'll try and get some answers for you. At this stage this lovely pair will be going into foster care until a permanent home can be found for them. |
