Vanessa

Watching a New York day unfold from the apparent safety of a 14th floor balcony

The yellow tape was draped around the crime scene and the chalk marks drawn. Vanessa was about to flick the remains of her cigarette out of the window and close it when she saw two young boys standing by her corvette with a crow bar. She shouted at them and felt instantly stupid. Young boys with crow bars did not fear women 14 floors away. The crow bar was not however intended for her car. The top of the nearby parking meter was soon wedged off as one of the boys reached his hand in to grab the money. Far from grabbing the money, he could not even retrieve his hand. The more he tried, the more it stuck and was soon bleeding down the side of the meter like the chocolate on an ice cream. He began to yell, to which his partner in crime objected, suggesting that the cops would hear. The accomplice soon ran off, leaving his friend both bleeding and crying. He looked up toward Vanessa, who for a brief second had thought of going down stairs to help him.
