An antique dealer is haunted by a woman on his mind, and a mysterious book.

He scurried down the cobbled road which was treacherously wet after the morning rain. Gabriel was wearing a new pair of English brogues which were both hard on the feet and had no grip in the wet. He was gaining on her as she turned her head. Her eyes were amazing, like amethysts. She smiled and hopped on a tram, shaking her head from side to side and laughing. Gabriel raised his hand as if he were hailing a taxi cab, then stumbled forward on the cobbles and slid headfirst onto Mr Cacciotore’s fruit stall.

Mr Cacciotore was furious but was also a kind hearted man and seemed concerned that Gabriel might be hurt. Gabriel rarely lost his temper but was livid about losing this damn girl and scuffing his new shoes. Gathering his composure and apologising profusely to Mr Cacciotore, he walked humbly back to his antique shop.
