SCROLL DOWN FOR DETAILS
This
Guild was created to cater for people to make a mark in the world.
Its world membership is growing and now numbers TWENTY.
The goal of the guild is to give an illusion of being eccentric based
on the fact that most eccentrics are wealthy. By wearing odd socks a
person appears to be eccentric, as eccentrics are reputed to be
wealthy then members of the opposite sex are naturally drawn to the
wearer of the odd socks.
There are some side
benefits for example:
The look of horror on
the face of ones colleagues, partner, spouse or parent when they
realise you are wearing odd socks when out shopping or at an important
function.
The curious looks of strangers when they notice you are wearing odd
socks.
The look on strangers faces when they come to the conclusion that you
are eccentric.
The look on strangers faces when they come to the conclusion you are
filthy rich because you appear eccentric..
The skill needed to
succeed as a Guild member is to wear odd socks without the
disciplinarian of your household realising until it is too late to do
anything about it. For example when you are in the supermarket or at a
cocktail party or important social function.
As the inaugural World
President of 'The Guild of Odd Socks Persons' I cordially invite you
to join. To qualify for membership you will need to have had two expeditions of no less
than two hours duration wearing odd socks in public, and then, unless
detected earlier, confess to the disciplinarian of the house your
exploits.

We are pleased to welcome Ross
Fisher who has worn odd socks for some 22 years so much so that
matching sock are now very odd to him. He is a member of the
medical profession and his colleagues and patients have come to accept
that Ross will be wearing odd socks whether in the consulting rooms or
in the operating theatre, whether on business or social. Ross is a
worthy member, welcome Ross.

Application received on line from
John Lammiman of Diamond Harbour New Zealand. Alias Captain Ranui.
John is an ex UK merchant seaman, ex London cabbie, ex
Christchurch NZ cabbie.
John created a scene at his local lawn bowls club wearing his odd
socks, he was accused of being an eccentric 'B' (perfect impression -
ed.) his response stopped them dead in their tracks -"I have another
pair just like this at home"
Today (Christmas day) he received a pair of prized CAPTAINS
SOCKS direct from UK. These are one red and one green sock, they are
known as "An essential Aid to determining Vital Navigational
Intelligence" No confusion with these socks, one for port and one for
starboard, just in case Captain Ranui should forget which is port and
which is starboard. (There is a trap of course - one has to have
the socks on the correct feet - ed.)
Welcome to the Guild John. (Pic to follow)

The following email tells us about our
youngest member Eleanor who on leaving hospital was wearing odd socks,
and on her first attendance at church was also wearing odd socks -
this did not go unnoticed by other church goers who are aware of
Lucy's passion for odd socks. Paul you must try to keep up with the
ladies of the household, and consider joining them as a member of the
Guild.
"Dear Bernard
My dad is sending you
a copy of two photos you might like to use on the
website. I am very
excited at the idea of being the member of a guild at
seven weeks old!
My mum and dad say I
am a very content and happy baby. When mum dresses
me, I wear odd socks,
but dad only puts them on if mum reminds him. He
has a lot to learn.
We all hope you have
a lovely Christmas and New Year.
God bless you and
yours,
Eleanor, p.p. Paul &
Lucy"

We have received an online
application for membership from Salt Lake City USA. The Harding family
describe the excitement of seeing member Desmond Smith get off the
plane on his last visit to the States wearing odd socks. Being a
NORMAL family the Hardings often lost socks in the washing process,
but Grandpa Des legitimised the wearing of odd socks for them on this
single visit. The Harding family celebrated their Grandpa's life by
wearing odd socks on the day of his funeral, which they could not
attend as it was in New Zealand. As previously reported many people at
the funeral wore odd socks as a tribute to this fine New Zealander.
We welcome the members of the Harding family to the Guild - Leah
Harding (nee Smith - Mother) Children - Breah - Brennon and Bridger.
I understand a photograph will be sent as soon as available.

It is with
great pleasure that we welcome Angela Reimer as a
member of the Guild. Angela is 1st
trombonist in the Addington Brass Band, her first major expedition in
odd socks was at the posh farewell dinner of President Bernard's
retirement, the board of directors took him and his wife Faye to an
award winning restaurant for dinner. Angela was wearing odd socks to
help the celebration along. The 'Coup de Gras' however was at the
2002 National Brass Band championships held in Invercargill where she
wore odd socks on stage for the bands 'Own choice' performance, and
again the next day for the 'Test piece'. To top off a worthy
membership application Angela also wore odd socks at the after champs
celebration.
The Addington Brass Band finished in third place of their grade, our
hearty congratulations go to the band and also to Angela whose sense
of humour and trombone performance in odd socks would have contributed
towards this stunning result for the band.
Visit the band's
website
for great pics of the band and more information.

-VALE-
It is with deep regret that I advise of the sudden death of Desmond
Bruce Smith OBE he passed away on 3 March 2002. Des was awarded his
OBE for services to sport. He was a New Zealand champion racing
cyclist for 18 years with 38 NZ Championship medals. He later went on
to manage NZ teams to World Champs and Commonwealth Games. He was a
long time director of Gold Band Taxis and Chairman of the board for
12 years. He was also founding Chairman of Gold Band Finance Ltd. He
was a strong family man with 4 children and 4 step children. He is
survived by his wife Margaret and the children. I am proud to have
called Des a friend. He loved the fun of the Odd Socks Guild and many
people were sporting Odd Socks at the funeral as a tribute to him, I
understand that his Grand Children in the USA who could not attend the
funeral in NZ also wore Odd Socks on the day of Grandpa's funeral.
Rest in peace good friend.

NEW MEMBER - A special
welcome to our first member from North America - Brady Nelson - Brady
has been wearing odd socks to school and at the time of application
had worn them for over a week. This created much consternation from
other students who of course are not as modern and creative as Brady
with their dress sense. Brady is living up to the family tradition set
by his Grandpa Desmond B. Smith OBE MGOSP who is extremely proud of
Brady Nelson MGOSP. We will publish Brady's photograph shortly.

NEW MEMBER -
We are delighted to
welcome Desmond B Smith OBE as a member of the Guild. He wore odd
socks to the special dinner that the Directors of Gold Band Taxis held
to farewell to retirement of World President Bernard S Hall from the
position of General Manager of that company (after 14 years.) In
addition he wore odd socks (One bright blue and one black) on his
flight from Christchurch New Zealand to Los Angeles USA (2 September
2001) on arrival he caused a sensation by disembarking his aircraft,
carrying his shoes and displaying his odd socks for all to see.
Desmond is our first member with a Queen's Award that of 'ORDER OF THE
BRITISH EMPIRE' he is proud to now add MGOSP after his name thus
D B Smith OBE MGOSP Congratulations Desmond.

I watched an interesting
interview on TV last week with Sir Paul McCartney. He was talking
about his late wife Linda and the development of his band WINGS. He
was describing Linda's individuality and sense of fun, it seems she
liked plaid socks and caused comment because she liked to be different
and wear socks which the plaid on each foot was different. Sir Paul
was very amused by this and suggested she was mischievous and an
individual in style.
Wouldn't she have made a wonderful Patron for the Guild - maybe Sir
Paul would be interested in fulfilling the role????..
NEW MEMBER...We
welcome our second female member Lucy M Harrison. Our first member
from UK. Lucy first wore odd socks back in 1987 when she wore them at
her 6th Form leaving presentation. Since then she has worn odd socks
on a very regular basis, so much so that if she isn't wearing them,
people ask her if something is wrong.
The membership is proud to have you join us Lucy, and especially as
you are from my home patch in England - Bernard.
