Smith of 3 Barnards Inn, Holborn, London, was a surveyor and had served at sea
in the India trade. He had also been engaged in commercial enterprises abroad.
He first became interested in the 1820 Settlers Emigration scheme when he
made application to the Colonial Office on behalf and Emigration society respected
persons interested in transporting at leas one hundred labouring families to
the Cape Colony. This application was not accepted but the Colonial Office offered
to accept a new party to be formed by him to replace a party of eleven men who
had withdrawn.
Smith hastily organised a new party consisting of some members of his old
party and others. Deposits were paid for eleven men to depart on the transport
ship "Nautilus" in November 1819. At Smith's request, he and his party
were granted permission to depart a week later on the ship "Northampton".
Included in the Smith's Party sailing list were:
William Smith, age 27, surveyor. His wife Ann, age 24.
John Josiah Smith, age 18, brother to William Smith.
The " Northampton" sailed from Gravesend on 12 December 1819 and
arrived at Algoa Bay on 30 April 1820. The party settled in northern Albany on
the road to Trumpeters Drift. Their settlement was name "Stoney Vale".
