31 January 1823 Judiths's mother, Margaret Hayes Boardman, died. Now the eldest
daughter at home, Judith, assumed the responsibility of running the house and
caring for her father and three younger sisters and three younger brothers; which
was a most difficult job under adverse living conditions.... When the Rev. William
Boardman died on 22 August 1825 the full respnsibility of the orphaned Boardman
children was hers.
"A ray of hope and happiness appeared in the form of a proposal of
marriage from John Henry Dixon, the leader of the Dixon party of 1820 Settlers,
a widower since 21 June 1824 when his first wife, Margaret Walden Dixon, had
died, leaving four daughters and one son. Judith Boardman and John Henry Dxon
were married in St. George's Church, Grahamstown, on 12 January 1826 by the Rev.
Thomas Ireland.
"Coming from a large family of boys and girls and for several years
having managed the household duties of her father's house, it was not difficult
for Judith to assume full responsibility of the Dxon household, acting as mother
to the five motherless children, Mary (15), Emma (12), Eliza (10), Sarah (8),
and William (5)
" Of the seven children born to Judith she only raised two to maturity;
her oldest daughter, Anne Judith, and her youngest boy, Henry Aldous."
