33. James Hayes BOARDMAN (1)(1) (2) (3)(11) (12)(13) (14) (photo) was born on 22 Jul 1808 in England, Lancashire, Winwick, Newton. He died on 22 Aug 1886 in South Africa, Cape Colony, Barkly East. Married to Elizabeth Dixie by The Revd. John Heavyside at St. George's Church, Grahamstown.

"James Boardman was 14 years of age on his arrival. He soon began life for himself as a clerk in the house of Forbes & David, still in Grahamstown. Subsequently he joined the Commissariat Department and served in that capacity in the War of 1835, acting as a volunteer also during the subsequent wars 1847-1853. In 1853 he was with the Colonial troops at the famous "Moirosi's Races" at Dulcie's Nek. Until 1847 he was occupied in trading up and down the country and then settled in Burghersdorp where he was in business for nine years, removing in 1856 to a farm in the Stormberg. Some years later, desiring to be near his sons, who had trekked into New England as the first pioneers, he settled in Lady Grey and on the death of Mrs Boardman about 14 years ago he came to reside with his eldest son Mr Philip Boardman at Holbrook and afterwards in Barkly East. One sister, two years older than the subject of this notice, still lives in Grahamstwon - Mrs Crause - and a numerous family of children and grandchildren remain to represent the honoured name. Six of his grandsons acted as bearers at his funeral on Wednesday, which was conducted according to the rites of the Church of England in the presence of a large number of inhabitants of the town and vicinity, who assembled to show their esteem for the deceased and their sympathy and respect for the members of his family." In 1860 sections of land consisting of from 600 to 1200 morgen on 21 year land leases in the Barkly East district was auctioned off at public sale. From Burghersdorp on 11 June 1860 James Hayes Boardman wrote a letter to T.H. Bowker, Member of the Legislative Assembly, in Cape Town, together with an application on behalf of himself and 22 others, requesting that their names be annexed to the previous list of applicants for the land leases.

I beg to enclose to you a list of farmers who are applicants for famrs in ?berg which is at present vacant but was formerly occupied by Chief Kreli and others.

He was married to Elizabeth DIXIE (daughter of Philip DIXIE and Lady Florence Elizabeth NEVILLE) on 17 Feb 1834 in South Africa, Cape Colony, Grahamstown. Elizabeth DIXIE (1)(1) (2)(3) was born about 1813 in England, Lancashire. She died on 12 May 1850 in South Africa, Cape Province, Burghersdorp. James Hayes BOARDMAN and Elizabeth DIXIE had the following children:

He was married to Jane Sophia HOLDER (daughter of William HOLDER and Sophia CLARKE) on 7 Jan 1851 in South Africa, Cape Colony, Burghersdorp. Jane Sophia HOLDER(1) (1)(2) (3) (photo) was born on 6 Mar 1816 in England. She died on 2 Oct 1873 in South Africa, Cape Colony, Lady Grey. She was christened. Married by the Rev. J. Barrow, St. Mary's Church, Bathurst Married by the Rev. J. Barrow, St. Mary's Church, Bathurst
1820 Settler. from Gloucestershire. Ship:"Kennersley Castle" sailed from Bristol. James Hayes BOARDMAN and Jane Sophia HOLDER had the following children:
