FAQ
Why should I use a Debt Collector? There are many reasons for using a Debt Collector
when a Client does not pay, refuses to acknowledge the debt or sometimes does not even
respond to your Correspondence at all. Usually the involvement of a third party (the Debt
Collector) is enough to entice the client to pay.
How do Debt Collections (Nelson) contact the Debtor? Our main contact is through written
correspondence or telephone calls (providing you know the Debtors phone number). At this
stage we do not personally visit the Debtors - you can do this through other Collection
Agencies however there is a cost whether they retrieve your money or not.
How much does it cost? See our Fee Structure page for details.
Who pays the Costs? If the Debtor is told PRIOR to doing business with you they are liable
for our Collection Costs. This can include a sign on the counter, a written contract or even
verbally giving notice - a note on an invoice sent out at the end of the month does NOT
comply as it is sent after the work has been done or goods purchased. However in saying this
- if the Debtor pays the Debt but not the Costs we reserve the right to invoice your Company
for our fees and then you can take legal action to get these off the Debtor.
What do I have to do? We have an online form you can fill out or alternatively you can
phone, fax, post or e-mail the details, then leave the rest to us, we will be in contact with you
and give you updates on all of the Debtors you have placed with us.
Where can the Debtor pay? They can send a cheque to us at P.O Box 122, Nelson, or set up
an automatic payment form if your Company agrees to installments - this then gets paid out to
you monthly less the fees, or they can pay manually at the Nelson Finance Centre building,
134 Bridge Street, Nelson.
What happens if the Debtor does NOT pay? To start with - no fees will be charged if the
Debtor does not pay after our process has been completed. Depending on the situation you
can then take legal action against the Debtor through the local Court this is a relatively simple
operation that you could do yourself. You may need to employ a Private Investigator if the
Debtor has moved and is unable to be found by us. Other Collection Agencies will help you
with legal action if you wish but there is a much higher cost than if you do it yourself.
Who is Debt Collections (Nelson)? Originally Debt Collections (Nelson) was formed by
Nelson Finance Centre Ltd and its owner Jim Young, this was in 1998. Recently (August
2001) I (Sandy Pomeroy) took over the running of Debt Collections (Nelson) and am
operating it from my house. The business is still owned by Nelson Finance Centre Ltd.
Who is Sandy Pomeroy? I have had over 5 years in the Finance Industry as Loans Officer
and Credit Controller for Nelson Finance Centre Ltd and I was working there when Debt
Collections (Nelson) began. So I have expertise in getting money off slow or non paying
Customers. I have since had two children and have taken over the running of this business
from home.
