Apirana Taylor is a well-known Maori poet, short story writer, novelist, playwright, musician and storyteller. He has been widely published, both nationally and internationally. Apirana mainly writes his own stories that come from his Maori culture. As well, he tells traditional Maori myths. As a storyteller, Apirana usually tells his stories in English, but often tells them in his own Maori language. He uses dance and movement as part of his story-telling techniques, and frequently plays his own music to accompany his stories. He plays the guitar and an assortment or traditional Maori nose flutes, the clarinet, the blues harp and a variety of percussion instruments. Tricks with his flute add old-world magic to the atmosphere of his stories. Apirana would be willing to come to your school to perform his stories, and/or take creative writing workshops. The length of these sessions can vary from forty-five minutes (performing poems and stories) to ninety minutes (for workshops), largely depending on the age or the children and what format of session you would like. Fee negotiable. If you would like a visit to your school from Apirana Taylor, please either post back the form below, fax or Email Prue Tosswill to register your interest:
