Rommel
Our first GWP was Rommel who arrived when Lucy the Beagle was about 5 years old Rommel..
Lucy the beagle was an amazing rabbit dog, she even worked well on possums. Though Lucy's hounding and chasing technique was absolutely the worst ability for deer stalking.
Rommel the GWP was the deer dog. He proved himself by leading us to a deer when he was about 9 months old.
I was impressed with young Rommel - with only some simple obedience training he was able to hunt with us effectively.
Unfortunately Rommel (2yrs) and Lucy (7 yrs) died separately in 1998.
Our brief time with Rommel convinced us that when we wanted to get another dog it would be a German Wirehaired Pointer. The strong hunting ability, the affectionate behavior and the intelligence of the breed are captivating attributes. We eventually brought two GWP's, brother and sister from the same breeder, Peny Tonkin - one of NewZealand's best GWP breeders.
Ben and Calrla.
Ben is a big boy, heavy, stocky, with a thick coat. He is a gentle, somewhat timid giant. Likes to eat. Carries in the newspaper in from the letter box, can open doors by operating pulling down the door handle, hickupss when hungry. Likes his toysSnoresrs. A little bit slow.
Carla is hyperactive, dominant, protective, demanding. She is somewhat smaller and much lighter than Ben. Shes jumps up at you, a habit that we are trying to stop. She guards items of clothes from Ben, she wants to lay on us when we are in the lounge where Ben likes to sit a few feet away in his own space and keep and eye on things.
